Law Firm Holiday Card Survival Series: Part 2

It’s the most wonderful time of year, but law firm holiday card season can be a frustrating time for legal marketers. From selecting the right card to making sure your contacts receive it, holiday cards can be a real headache for your firm’s marketing team. In our holiday card survival series, we’ll look at some common holiday card headaches and how ContactEase CRM can help.

In this post, we’ll provide key considerations to plan your holiday card strategy and help ensure your least frustrating holiday card season yet!

Getting Started

No matter the platform, it’s important to approach the holiday card season with clear goals and objectives. Here are some key considerations to get you started:

  • Think about your objectives: Would you like to send warm wishes as an act of goodwill, or is there another message you’d like to send? Many firms make charitable contributions throughout the year and the holiday season is no exception. Sending an annual communication be it a traditional paper card or an electronic one also provides a good opportunity to clean up contact information in your firm’s database.

  • Decide the type of card to send: Ecards have come a long way and can provide opportunities to personalize and encourage engagement with recipients. When attorneys take the time to write a note, traditional paper cards can be effective, too.

  • Develop your timeline: No matter the type of card you do, you will need to think about the time it will take to select your card as well as delivery date so you can create your project plan. For example, do you plan to send a Thanksgiving card (as a reminder, Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday of October in Canada and the fourth Thursday of November in the United States). Many firms now opt to send cards in celebration of the new year which provides a little more time to get things done.

  • Consider your recipients: Many firms will send cards to everyone on their mailing list while others may create a plan to recognize top-tier clients and referral sources.

  • Share your plans: Communicate your plans to others in the firm. Ask attorneys and staff to compile their list of recipients (ContactEase List Manager makes it easy). Let them know how the card will be distributed. Be sure to provide clear deadlines. If multiple people will be signing a paper card, you’ll need to take that into consideration as well.

  • Find your card: There are dozens of options for selecting a traditional paper card. If you lack internal resources to develop your own ecard, there are plenty of options as well. Many firms choose to take advantage of their internal talents as well. Here’s a fun example from McBrayer. • Determine your needs: If you’re producing a video, will you require assistance from IT? Do you know where you’ll host it? If you’ll be sending a large number of cards, or requiring assistance with printing, you’ll want to loop in IT if there is a need to host a video on a server or prep assistants who will help with list generation, labels, or even stuffing envelopes.
