SurePoint’s annual ranking of top-performing mid-sized law firms (50–150 attorneys) based on growth and stability.

A real-time rankings system recognizing mid-sized law firm health, growth, and long-term stability.

April 21, 2026 [Austin, TX]SurePoint Technologies, a leading provider of legal software and intelligence solutions, today announced the release of its 2025 Leopard Law Firm Index (LLFI) Mid-Sized 200 Rankings.

Powered by the SurePoint Legal Insights platform (formerly Leopard Solutions), the LLFI Mid-Sized 200 evaluates U.S. law firms with 50-150 attorneys on growth and stability, delivering a data-driven view of firm performance and overall health.

Focusing on firms just below the traditional LLFI Top 200 threshold (150 attorneys), the Mid-Sized 200 spotlights an often underrepresented segment that is emerging as one of the legal market’s most competitive—defined by record levels of mergers, talent movement, and accelerated change—making inclusion in the rankings a powerful differentiator.

2025 LLFI Mid-Sized 200 – Key Findings

A Competitive and Shifting Market

The rankings show mobility, rapid advancement, and geographic concentration:

  • 50% turnover among the Top 20 firms year over year.
  • Nearly half of the Top 50 firms maintained their positions.
  • Top-performing firms are concentrated in the Northeast (54 firms) and the West (53 firms)
  • California leads with 42 firms (21%), with more than half of the Top 20 headquartered there; Los Angeles (17), New York City (16), and Chicago (14) lead in overall firm concentration.

Mid-Sized Firms Are Growing—Strategically

Sustainable growth—not expansion at any cost—continues to separate top-performers.

  • 10% average headcount growth across ranked firms
  • 25 firms achieved 100% retention across lateral and new hires
  • Average retention reached 93% for laterals and 90% for new hires

“These shifts reflect strategic decisions paying off in real time,” said Eric Thurston, President & CEO, SurePoint. “Mid-sized firms are no longer competing on size alone. The firms climbing the LLFI are those investing thoughtfully in talent, culture, and operational discipline—and the data shows it.”

How the LLFI Measures Firm Sustainability

Established in 2020, the LLFI assesses firm sustainability through several key indicators—including attorney movement, retention, tenure, revenue per lawyer, diversity, and partner promotions.

While continuously updated, the Mid-Sized 200 rankings are based on each firm’s average LLFI score over the course of 2025, offering a fair and consistent measure across the calendar year while still reflecting the index’s real-time responsiveness. Each firm receives a score ranging from 0 to 500, designed to remove firm-size bias and reflect long-term health and stability.
